About St John the Divine

St John the Divine is an active Anglican parish church in Horninglow, on the north-western side of Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Located on Horninglow Road North, it forms part of the Church of England’s Lichfield Diocese.

Edward Holmes designed the church, which was completed in 1866 in the Geometrical Gothic manner. Pale Coxbench stone covers its brick construction, while plasterwork and Bath stone detailing feature inside. The plan includes an aisled, five-bay nave, a chancel, vestry and south-west spire tower. William Warrington made the eastern stained-glass window, illustrating scenes associated with St John the Evangelist. The vestry was enlarged in 1911, and a Lady chapel was created within the southern aisle in 1928. Its memorial glass for Sarah Auden portrays St Chad and St Hilda alongside Celtic designs. A commemorative rood screen records the 130 Horninglow men lost during the First World War. The present ring of six bells came from a church at Batley Carr and arrived in 1996.
