About Saint Modwen's Church
Saint Modwen’s Church is an active Anglican place of worship in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, serving a parish in the Diocese of Lichfield. Standing beside the market square, it holds Grade I listed status. Its dedication recalls Modwenna, a nun associated with the establishment of a seventh-century abbey in Burton.
Work on the present building started in 1719. Services were held there from 1723, although construction continued until 1728. It took the place of surviving parts of Burton Abbey’s church, which townspeople had used after the abbey was dissolved. Richard and William Smith created the Classical design, with their younger brother Francis overseeing its completion. Built from red sandstone, it includes an aisled nave of five bays, galleries, an apse and a three-level tower at the west end. Inside are a fifteenth-century font, an organ case dating to 1771 and an 1825 monument to Lady Fowler by sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott.
