About Saint Mary's Church
Saint Mary’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on Church Road in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Serving the parish of Rolleston on Dove within the Diocese of Lichfield, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The present sandstone church originated in the 12th century and was enlarged during the 13th century. Its earliest surviving feature is a Romanesque north doorway dating from around 1130, an uncommon position for the principal entrance. Sir Arthur Blomfield directed extensive restoration work in 1892, when the north aisle was added and the south aisle extended. The building comprises a nave, chancel, two aisles and a tower crowned by a spire. Its stained glass includes medieval examples and later work by Charles Eamer Kempe. Eight bells hang in the tower, with the oldest cast in 1586. A separate southern doorway was historically used by the Mosley family, who were landowners and significant church benefactors.
