About Saint Mark's Church

Saint Mark's Church is an active Anglican parish serving Winshill, east of Burton-on-Trent, within the Diocese of Derby. Set on raised ground at Church Hill Street, it overlooks the Trent valley and forms a widely visible landmark. The building has Grade II listed status. Worship is held at 10:45 am on Sundays, 10:15 am on Wednesdays and 6:00 pm on Fridays. The church is partnered with St Wystan’s in Bretby, holding a shared service in months with five Sundays.

Opened in 1869, the building was designed by Edward Holmes in the Gothic Revival tradition. Its construction was financed by John Gretton, a brewer connected with Bladon House. The plan features an aisled nave, a chancel and a south-west tower crowned by a broach spire. Six bells made by Taylor’s of Loughborough hang in the tower and are sounded on Sundays and for weddings and funerals. William Harold Coltman, a decorated First World War serviceman, and his wife Eleanor are buried in the churchyard.
