About Saint Chad
Saint Chad is an Anglican church in Hunter Street, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, and belongs to the Diocese of Lichfield. Protected at Grade I since 1979, the church is recognised for its exceptional architectural significance.
George Frederick Bodley produced the design in 1903, and building commenced two years later. Following Bodley’s death, Cecil Greenwood Hare brought the project to completion in 1909, before its consecration the following year. Michael Bass, the first Lord Burton, funded the church as a gift to the town at a cost of £38,000. Constructed from red Hollington stone in the Decorated Gothic manner, it has an angular vestry and a free-standing tower at the north-west corner, connected by a covered vaulted link. Inside are a reredos designed by Bodley, a 32-stop organ made by Peter Conacher and Company, and a ring of eight bells completed in 2000.
