About St. Thomas' Church, Crookes
St. Thomas' Church, Crookes is a Church of England congregation in western Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Also known as STC Sheffield, the church has an evangelical character and brings together Anglican and Baptist traditions. This partnership began in 1982, when the congregation united with Crookes Baptist Church, and remains in place today.
Founded in 1840 to serve an expanding rural community, the church and its burial ground were consecrated by the Archbishop of York on 1 October that year. Its principal worship space retains a Victorian design, including a square tower and stained-glass windows set beneath Gothic arches. Considerable enlargement took place during the 1980s, while another addition in 2011 connected the church with the former Crookes Endowed School. Built in 1790, the school was acquired in 1981 and reopened after renovation the following year.
