About St Paul's

St Paul's is a Church of England parish church on Wordsworth Avenue in Parson Cross, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. With its distinctive post-war design, the church is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.

Opened in 1959, it was built for the New Parson Cross estate and initially served as a daughter church of St Mary’s, Ecclesfield. A separate parish was established in 1973. Scottish architect Basil Spence designed the building on a restricted budget while also working on Coventry Cathedral. Its structure comprises brick side walls beneath a shallow curved roof, supported by diagonal steel braces, with largely glazed ends. A 15-metre campanile formed from paired brick walls stands at the front, topped by a six-metre cross. Inside, the organ occupies a balcony, while an African teak panel screens the altar from the large window. Spence also gave the church its hammered-iron altar ornaments.
