About St Matthew's Church, Sheffield

St Matthew’s Church, Sheffield is an active Church of England parish church on Carver Street in Sheffield city centre. This Grade II listed building follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition and is open each day for worship, visitors and private prayer. It serves a parish whose residential population has grown again amid the shops, pubs and student life of the Devonshire Quarter.

The parish was formed in 1848, with worship initially held in a local school. Construction began in 1854, and the church, designed by Flockton & Son, was consecrated the following year. Its west front has an eight-sided tower, a slender spire and a single bell. J. D. Sedding remodelled the eastern end in the 1880s and designed the altar and reredos; stained glass includes his 1886 east window. Other features include a First World War memorial and a British-style organ made in 1992. Fire caused damage in 1956, while extensive restoration took place in 2000.
