About St Mark's
St Mark’s is an active Church of England parish church on Broomfield Road in Broomhill, Sheffield. Dedicated to St Mark the Evangelist, it has served the united parishes of Broomhill and Broomhall since 2000. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
A temporary iron church opened on the site in 1854, funded by steelmaker William Butcher. William Henry Crossland designed its Gothic Revival stone successor, completed in 1871. An incendiary bomb destroyed most of that building during the Sheffield Blitz in December 1940, leaving the south-west tower, porch and spire. George Pace restored the surviving structure and incorporated it into a modern replacement, begun in 1961 and consecrated in 1963. Built around a reinforced-concrete frame, the later church has rubble-filled walls, slender clear-glazed windows and a light interior. Pace also designed its modern fittings, including the pulpit, lectern, font cover, seating and organ case, while Harry Stammers created the east window.
