About St John's

St John’s is a Church of England parish church on Shrewsbury Road in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains a place of worship and is recognised as a Grade I listed building.

Records of clergy associated with an earlier church survive from 1200, while the present building dates from about 1250. Its fabric incorporates ancient masonry and part of a Saxon cross, suggesting a longer Christian presence. The 24-metre tower was added around 1500 and contains eight bells, with clock faces to the west and south. Stained glass includes historic examples alongside a window installed in 1992. A fish-shaped stainless-steel weather vane, made by local resident Arnold Lesley Smith, was placed on the tower in 1975. Interior alterations in 2006 provided community facilities, while the churchyard contains a memorial lychgate, an old cross base and commemorative gardens.
