About St James - Midhope
St James - Midhope is a small Church of England church in the rural hamlet of Midhopestones, within Sheffield’s northern boundary in South Yorkshire. Dedicated officially to James the Less, it belongs to the parish of Penistone. The church has held Grade II* listed status since 1969.
The present church is thought to date from around 1360, when Robert de Barnby probably established it as a chapel serving the distant parish church at Ecclesfield, although Thomas de Barnby may have founded it earlier. Following deterioration during the later seventeenth century, Godfrey Bosville restored it in 1705. His work included rebuilding parts of both ends and adding the porch, bell cupola, gallery and enclosed pews. Notable survivals include a Jacobean pulpit and carved scallop shells over the doorway. Renovations in 1978 lowered the pulpit and reused oak from removed pews for new furnishings.
