Sheffield Cathedral stands on Church Street in central Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, it serves both as the cathedral of the Church of England’s Diocese of Sheffield and as an active parish church. It gained cathedral status when the diocese was established in 1914 and is among Sheffield’s five Grade I listed buildings.
Christian worship on the site may date from the 12th century, while parts of the present structure originate around 1200. A replacement church completed in 1280 was largely taken down and reconstructed on a cross-shaped plan in about 1430. Later additions included the Shrewsbury Chapel and the present Chapel of St Katherine. The nave walls were renewed between 1790 and 1793. Flockton & Gibbs completed a substantial restoration in 1880, adding transepts on the north and south sides. Further work continued into the 20th century, leaving a distinctive combination of medieval fabric and modern additions.
