About Saint Mary's Church
Saint Mary's Church stands on Bramall Lane in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and continues to serve a Church of England parish. Designated at Grade II*, it now accommodates both worship and community activities. It has strong ties with Sheffield United Football Club nearby, which hosted its services while work was carried out in 2000.
Joseph Potter designed the building in the Perpendicular Gothic manner as one of three Sheffield churches funded under legislation passed in 1818. The Countess of Surrey set its first stone in place on 12 October 1826, before its consecration on 21 July 1830. Its prominent tower reaches 140 feet, or 43 metres. After wartime bombing in Sheffield, repairs created separate areas: worship continued in the chancel and the nave’s two bays nearest the east end, while the remaining interior became a community facility. Renovation completed in 2000 reunited these functions within one adaptable interior.
