About Church of Saint Mary's
The Church of Saint Mary’s stands on Church Street in Ecclesfield, about four miles north of central Sheffield. This active Church of England parish church serves the local community and was designated a Major Parish Church in 2019. It is Grade I listed, a distinction shared by only four other buildings within Sheffield’s boundaries.
A place of worship may have existed here in Anglo-Saxon times, while the first substantial church was built in the early twelfth century. Most of the present local-stone building dates from work begun in 1478 and finished around 1500, although earlier masonry survives in the nave, tower and supporting pillars. Its design is Perpendicular Gothic. Notable features include an octagonal font, a Victorian pulpit carved with episodes from the life of St Paul, a pipe organ and ten bells, including two from the seventeenth century. Reassembled historic glass remains in the north aisle and vestry, and an eleventh-century Anglo-Saxon cross shaft is preserved inside.
