About Christ Church Stannington
Christ Church Stannington is a Church of England place of worship in Sheffield’s Stannington district, with its address on Church Street. Since the parish was established independently in 1843, it has served as its parish church. The building is designated Grade II for its architectural and historic interest.
Woodhead and Hurst, an architectural practice based in Doncaster, designed the church, which opened in 1830 after its foundation stone was set in 1828. Its construction cost £3,000, supported by an 1824 parliamentary church-building grant and substantial gifts from sisters Eliza and Ann Harrison. The Gothic design uses roughly dressed gritstone and features a short, square tower carrying a weather vane, three clock faces and shuttered bell openings. Seven battlemented pinnacles crown the corner supports. A lychgate commemorating John Nichols dates from 1940. During extensive work in 1992–93, chairs replaced the pews, the floor and wiring were renewed, a vestry was built, and the area around the chancel was opened up.
