About Treeton Parish Church
Treeton Parish Church stands on Front Street in Treeton, within Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Dedicated to St Helen, it belongs to the Church of England and the Diocese of Sheffield. It continues to serve the village as its parish church and has Grade I listed status. Its prominent position makes it visible across the surrounding village.
A place of worship occupied the site by 1086, while most of the surviving structure was erected between about 1175 and 1200 in the Norman style. Norman arches and a child’s coffin survive from the earlier building. The tower’s rubble-built lower section dates from the 12th century, while its crenellated upper stage was added during the 15th century. Other work from that period includes the lead roof, south porch, south chapel and part of the nave. A worn 13th-century knight’s effigy is set into the west wall. The church was altered around the turn of the 14th century and restored in 1869 and 1892. Its tower houses six bells and has a clock on its eastern face.
