About St Lawrence CofE
St Lawrence CofE is the Church of England parish church for Hatfield, north-east of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Dating back to around 1150, it remains the parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1966.
The earliest fabric is pebble-built, while much of the later structure uses limestone quarried at Roche Abbey. Its cross-shaped layout includes a five-bay nave, a three-bay chancel, north and south chapels, transepts and a central tower. The aisled arcades were introduced during the 1200s, followed by the tower, transepts and eastern section around 1400. After fire damage in the 1760s, alterations were undertaken by Thomas Jackson in 1872 and restoration by Edwin Dolby followed in 1882. Surviving details include a round-arched Norman doorway, mainly fifteenth-century roofs, an elaborate timber chancel screen, Perpendicular windows and glass largely designed by Charles Eamer Kempe. A north transept window commemorating the Millennium was installed in 2000.
