About Good Shepherd Cathedral, Ayr

Good Shepherd Cathedral, Ayr is a Category C listed former Roman Catholic cathedral in Ayr, South Ayrshire. Worship ended there on 20 May 2007 as attendance had declined, and St Margaret’s in Ayr subsequently became the diocesan cathedral. The church building now contains affordable housing.

Completed in 1957 to provide for Catholics from Whitletts, Dalmilling, Lochside and Braehead, the church was planned by architects John Frederick Torry and William Cowie. Local Catholics had previously attended services at St Margaret’s in Ayr, while Mass on Sundays also took place at the community centre in Whitletts. In 1961 it was elevated from parish church to cathedral following the destruction by fire of St Andrew’s Cathedral in Dumfries. Redevelopment commenced in 2010, forming 25 homes within the structure. Its gable and tower were preserved during the work, which concluded in 2012; residents took up occupancy that April.
