About Ayr Cathedral
Ayr Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral and parish church in Ayr, South Ayrshire. Dedicated to Saint Margaret, it serves as the principal church of the Diocese of Galloway and houses the bishop’s seat. It received cathedral status in 2007 after the former diocesan cathedral, the Good Shepherd, closed.
Designed by James Dempster, the church opened in 1827, a year after its foundation stone was laid. Liturgical changes during the 1960s and 1970s reshaped the sanctuary so that Mass could be celebrated facing the congregation. Extensive restoration began in 1999, addressing damp, leaking water, damaged windows, electrical faults and general deterioration. The renewed interior included refurbished sanctuary fittings, a central aisle, stained glass, an organ, a larger sacristy, improved lighting and modern heating. The building reopened and was rededicated on 31 March 2000. Two books signed by parishioners, commemorating the community and deceased relatives and friends, were placed beneath the high altar.
