Wells Cathedral stands on Cathedral Green in Wells, Somerset. Formally dedicated to St Andrew, it serves as the cathedral of the Church of England’s Diocese of Bath and Wells and houses the bishop’s seat. Services are held each day, and annual visitor numbers exceed 300,000. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
A church was established on the site in the early eighth century, while the present building was begun around 1175. Most of the nave and western transepts date from the first main phase of construction and display Early English Gothic design. Later work introduced Decorated Gothic features to the eastern sections, central tower, chapter house and Lady Chapel, where medieval stained glass survives. The sculpted west front includes around 300 figures, with its two towers added between 1385 and 1410. The cloisters were altered during the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, followed by restoration work in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
