About Church of St Peter and St Paul
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is an Anglican parish church in Charlton Adam, part of The Charltons in Somerset. It serves a parish within the Somerton, Compton Dundon and The Charltons benefice and the Ivelchester deanery. The building has Grade I listed protection.
The site has medieval roots dating to the fourteenth century, while much of the surviving fabric was constructed during the following century. An earlier church here belonged to Bruton Abbey from 1142 until 1166. Its first patron saint was Peter alone, with Paul added in either the sixteenth or seventeenth century. During alterations carried out in 1860, the galleries were taken out and a barrel-vaulted nave roof was fitted. Interior features include a Norman font and a pulpit from the Jacobean era. Five bells hang in the tower on a frame dating to the 1500s, repaired in 2005. The oldest bell was cast in Bristol around 1490. A glass panel at the belfry balcony bears apostolic symbols and images of plants found in Britain.
