About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary is an Anglican parish church in Charlton Mackrell, within The Charltons in Somerset. It serves in a united benefice alongside Somerton and Kingsdon, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Its architectural and historic significance is recognised through its designation at Grade II*.

Originating in the 1200s, the church is built from local Hamstone beneath slate-covered roofs. Work to renew the building was carried out in the 1790s and the 1840s. The later programme involved major alterations, including dismantling the musicians’ gallery and constructing a northern vestry. The transept window received new stone tracery around 1330, though its medieval glazing has not survived. Buttresses reinforce the corners of both the chancel and southern transept. Gargoyles adorn the tower, which houses a ring of six bells. A circular font from the church’s earliest period remains inside, while Victorian work accounts for most of its decorative scheme and stained glazing.
