St Swithin’s is a Church of England parish church on The Paragon in the Walcot district of Bath, Somerset. It remains a place of worship, with a Sunday service at 10:00 am, and is protected at Grade II* for its architectural and historic significance.
Christian worship on the site can be traced to the tenth century, with remnants of an earlier church surviving below the crypt. John Palmer constructed the present building from 1777 to 1790, replacing the church where Jane Austen’s parents had married in 1764. Thomas Bonner added the spire above the square tower in 1848, while stained glass showing Christ’s Ascension was installed on the eastern wall during the same decade. William Wilberforce married Barbara Spooner here in 1797. Memorials and burials also connect the church with writers Christopher Anstey and Frances Burney, Rear Admiral Sir Edward Berry, and Jane Austen’s father, George Austen.
