About Christ Church

Christ Church is a Church of England proprietary chapel on Julian Road in Bath, Somerset. Although it is not a parish church, it holds regular worship and activities in a similar pattern, serving people from the neighbourhood and beyond. The Grade II listed church belongs to a charitable trust and is overseen by trustees and a church council within the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

Founded by clergy and lay supporters concerned about social exclusion, the church enabled people unable to pay pew rents to worship without charge. John Palmer designed the building, which was completed in 1798 with Gothic Revival details and classical proportions. It has north and south aisles, galleries on three sides, and an apse added by John Elkington Gill in 1865–66. Notable features include stained glass by A. O. Hemming, James Powell and Sons, and Clayton and Bell, alongside a distinctive timber altarpiece. Its organ has undergone several restorations, while recast bells were installed in the tower in 2015.
