About St. Stephen's Church

St. Stephen’s Church stands on Lansdown Road in Bath, Somerset, and serves as a Church of England parish church. Completed in 1845, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. The parish belongs to Inclusive Church, supporting the inclusion of people irrespective of ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

James Wilson designed the church for the growing population of north-east Bath, with construction taking place from 1840 to 1845 at a cost of £6,000. It was built in Bath Stone quarried at Limpley Stoke and was not consecrated until 1881. An aisle was added for the Royal School in 1866. W. J. Willcox created the broad apsidal chancel, vestry and organ chamber in 1882–83, followed by a painted ceiling. Other features include an 1843 marble font, work by Sir T. G. Jackson, and Mark Angus’s 1983 stained glass commemorating the parish centenary. The tower masonry was repaired and the bells replaced in 2007.
