About St Mary Magdalene, Battlefield
St Mary Magdalene, Battlefield stands in the village of Battlefield, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire. This Church of England building is now redundant and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is protected at Grade II* and is dedicated to Mary Magdalene.
The church was established after the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403, possibly above a communal grave for those who died. Roger Ive, a local rector, initiated the foundation with support and funding from Henry IV. Conceived as a chantry, it housed several chaplains who regularly prayed for the dead. The college was suppressed in 1548, after which the building became the parish church. Periods of severe deterioration followed, alongside rebuilding efforts from the mid-eighteenth century. Samuel Pountney Smith was the architect associated with its Victorian restoration, which attracted criticism for its approach and extent, although much medieval fabric survived.
