About Christ Church
Christ Church is a Church of England parish church on Welshpool Road in suburban Shrewsbury. Serving Shelton and Oxon within the Diocese of Lichfield, it remains the parish’s place of worship and seats 150 people. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Edward Haycock Sr designed the church, which was completed in 1854 to serve residents whose access to worship could be disrupted by River Severn flooding. Its Early English design features lancet forms, rubble masonry with dressed ashlar, a gabled porch and a bellcote. Inside are a scissor-braced roof, an octagonal stone font and a carved stone pulpit bearing a pelican motif. The ornate reredos was developed from 1886 to 1904. Stained glass dates from 1884, 1948 and 1967, with another window installed over the chancel arch in 2001 to mark the millennium.
