About Shrewsbury Abbey
Shrewsbury Abbey, formally dedicated to the Holy Cross, stands east of central Shrewsbury near the English Bridge, within Abbey Foregate. This Church of England place of worship remains active as the principal church of the Holy Cross parish. It is a scheduled monument and also holds Grade I listed status.
A Saxon chapel dedicated to St Peter previously occupied the site. Roger de Montgomery, the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, established a Benedictine community there in 1083, with monks arriving from Saint-Martin-de-Sées in Normandy. Monastic life began around 1087, after accommodation had been built and the first abbot appointed. The monastery later became wealthy, influential and associated with pilgrimage. Most of its complex was demolished during the 16th century, but the nave was retained for parish worship and forms the surviving church.
