Saint Chad’s Church is a Church of England church at 1 St Chads Terrace in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Standing close to the Quarry parkland, its circular form and tall tower make it a familiar local landmark. The present church is protected as a Grade I listed building and seeks to welcome the wider community.
Tradition links its foundation to Offa, ruler of Mercia from 757 to 796, although its origins may lie earlier in buildings associated with a sixth-century royal palace. For almost a millennium, the church occupied a site near College Hill. After the earlier building was replaced, the congregation moved to the present structure in 1792. Charles Darwin was baptised here in 1809 and attended services during childhood with his mother, Susannah. The church joined the Greater Churches Group in 2010.
