About St Peter's Church

St Peter’s Church is an Anglican parish church in Oakham, Rutland, with origins around 1150. Still serving as a place of parish worship, it has Grade I protection in recognition of its historic and architectural importance.

Surviving Norman elements include the font, nave arches and ornament around the entrance, although the doorway’s pointed shape may be later. The tower was added during the thirteenth century and has the uncommon form of upper levels broader than its lower section. Oak fittings from the sixteenth century include enclosed seating, decorative screens and a wooden partition between nave and tower. Further details include herringbone ironwork on the north entrance, stone seating formerly intended for infirm or older worshippers, and a sculpted head that may once have supported a candle. Memorials record Charles Noel, Royalist cavalry officer Endymion Cannynge, and Henry Rawlings alongside four wives. A Bible printed in 1611 is kept in a wall-mounted glass case.
