About Bisbrooke: St John the Baptist

Bisbrooke: St John the Baptist stands on Church Lane, near Oakham in Rutland. It is the Anglican parish church for Bisbrooke and dates from the Victorian period. The building is designated Grade II and has also been adapted to provide a hall for community use.

Completed in 1871, the current structure took the place of a much smaller medieval church. Restoration in recent years supported its additional community role, and a historic wooden parish chest is retained inside. The burial ground includes the 1813 memorial to Nathaniel Clark, often called the Waggoner’s Tombstone. Its carved scene shows a team of four horses hauling a farm wagon, with a hat-wearing driver holding his whip nearby. Agricultural tools fill the corner spaces, while a church is represented in the distance. This headstone is separately protected at Grade II.
