About St Nicholas
St Nicholas is a Church of England church on Main Street in Thistleton, within the Oakham area of Rutland. Formerly a parish church, it has served as a chapel of ease since the union of the Thistleton and Cottesmore parishes in April 2017. The building is listed at Grade II*.
The church was largely rebuilt in 1879 on the site of a medieval predecessor. Its surviving fourteenth-century tower rises in three stages and is decorated with gargoyles. The later work follows a Gothic style inspired by the same century. The chancel commemorates the rector Sir John Henry Fludyer’s three eldest children, who died from scarlet fever. Its apse has an angular exterior and a rounded interior, with terracotta figures of the four Evangelists set in canopied recesses. Above the altar is Mario Raggi’s relief depicting Christ’s burial. The font, organ and most other furnishings are comparatively recent.
