About Saint Dyfrig's Church
Saint Dyfrig's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Treforest, near Pontypridd in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Now protected as a Grade II listed building, the church opens during the week and is attended by students from the nearby University of South Wales campus during term.
The local Catholic community developed following Irish migration to South Wales after the Great Famine. Travelling priests initially served the area, while a school was established around 1850. An earlier church opened in Bridge Street in 1868, but eventually became too small. Construction of its Broadway replacement started in 1926, with Archbishop Francis Mostyn consecrating the building on 24 November 1927. Its dedication changed from the Latin form Dubricius to Dyfrig during the 1930s. A new altar formed part of alterations in the 1950s, and Penanne Crabbe created a full-size crucifix with accompanying panels in 1999.
