About St. John The Baptist Parish Church
St. John The Baptist Parish Church is a Church of England parish church in central Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf. It remains a place of worship and is protected as a Grade II* listed building, reflecting its architectural and historic significance.
Founded in 1189, the church retains elements of its medieval fabric. John Wesley preached here twice in 1749. By the early nineteenth century, the building held only about 250 worshippers, despite Aberdare’s population having reached around 13,000, and its condition had deteriorated. The burial ground was also full by 1853 and had suffered serious drainage problems. The vicar, John Griffith, spent a decade arranging a £900 restoration, after which the building was again fit for regular services shortly before he left Aberdare. During this period, he also promoted the construction of nearby St Elvan’s Church.
