St Elvan’s is a Church of England church on Church Street, near the heart of Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building and remains an important Anglican presence in the town.
The church was constructed between 1851 and 1852 following efforts led chiefly by John Griffith, then vicar of Aberdare. A growing local population and the limited capacity of the older parish church prompted a public fundraising campaign, which began in 1850 and raised substantial subscriptions. Andrew Moseley designed the building. Services conducted by Alfred Ollivant, Bishop of Llandaff, marked its opening on 30 September 1852, with special rail services bringing visitors from several Welsh towns. Consecration followed on 25 September 1854. Stephen Dykes Bower reorganised and redecorated the interior in 1961.
