Thomas Coats Memorial Church is on High Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire. Once used by a Baptist congregation, it is listed at Category A and ceased holding services in August 2018 because of declining attendance and substantial upkeep costs. The Coats Memorial Preservation Trust now manages the former place of worship as a reception and events venue, also accommodating film and television productions.
Thomas Coats’s family funded the church in his memory after his death in 1883. Hippolyte Blanc won the 1885 design competition, with construction beginning later that year and finishing in May 1894. Built from red sandstone in the Gothic Revival manner, it has a cross-shaped plan, external arched supports and a 60-metre tower topped by an openwork crown. Interior details include mosaic work, patterned paintwork, marble and alabaster carving, and angels painted over the chancel. Its William Hill & Sons organ contains roughly 3,040 pipes and remains largely unchanged.
