About Castle Semple Collegiate Church
Castle Semple Collegiate Church stands near Johnstone in Renfrewshire, close to the eastern shore of Castle Semple Loch in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. This late Gothic church is now roofless and is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland.
John Sempill, 1st Lord Sempill, established the collegiate foundation around 1504, with clergy, choristers and a sacristan. James IV visited in 1505 and made an offering. The church has a rectangular plan, a plain square western tower and a three-sided eastern apse, which was added during the 16th century for Lord Sempill’s monument following his death at Flodden in 1513. Sempill and Montgomerie heraldry appears above the chancel doorway and on an exterior stone. The roof was taken off in the 19th century, allowing ivy to spread inside. Internal dividing walls created three private burial areas, including one containing a memorial slab to Gabriel Sempel, who died in 1587.
