About Church of St David

The Church of St David is in Llanddew, Powys, near the castle and approximately two kilometres north-east of Brecon. It belongs to the Church of England and continues to serve its parish within the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon, offering regular worship. The building is protected at Grade I.

Although a religious community may have occupied the site from the sixth century, the surviving structure is considered thirteenth-century. Gerald of Wales, who was Archdeacon of Brecon during the later 1100s and resided at the nearby castle, has traditional links with the church. Its cross-shaped design includes nave, chancel, two transepts and a tower at the crossing. The walls use sandstone sourced locally, beneath roofing of shale tiles. The tower was reconstructed in 1629, with other work following during the eighteenth century. Ewan Christian repaired the ruined building in 1883–84 and 1900, and another refurbishment was completed in 1960.
