About St. Donat's Church
St. Donat's Church is a Church of England church in Welsh St Donats, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. Protected as a Grade I listed building since January 1963, it was serving the local community as a parish church by 1563. Earlier records also describe changing arrangements with nearby Llanblethian and support from Queen Anne’s Bounty.
The church was recorded in 1180 as a chapel connected with Tewkesbury Abbey. By the late nineteenth century, its oak roof, damp floor, cracked tower, plaster and window glass all required attention. Kempson and Fowler completed a substantial restoration in 1891, including repairs to the roof, tower and glazing, alongside new heating, lighting, furnishings and seating. Further work in 1915 added an organ and replaced the lighting. Replastering in 1996 exposed older masonry, including evidence that later doors and windows had been inserted into earlier walls. Traces of two lancet windows suggested that part of the chancel dated from the thirteenth century.
