About St. Matthew's Church

St. Matthew's Church is a Church of Scotland place of worship on Tay Street, Perth, near the eastern edge of the city centre. Facing the River Tay, it occupies a conspicuous riverside position and holds Category B listed status. The building is a familiar Perth landmark, appearing regularly in photographs taken from Queen’s Bridge and in works of art.

Architect John Honeyman designed the church, and construction was completed in November 1871. It was previously called the Free Church and subsequently the West Church. Its current congregation was established in 1965 through the union of congregations connected with Wilson, Scott Street, West and Middle, and Bridgend churches. November 2021 marked the building’s 150th anniversary. Among its artistic depictions is a painting by Alexander McLauchlan, an artist working during the 19th century.
