St. John's Kirk is an active Church of Scotland parish church on St Johns Place in central Perth, beside Perth Museum. Dedicated to John the Baptist, it stands on a site with deep ties to the city, formerly called St Johns Toun. The church is listed at Category A.
Christian worship on the site dates from 1126, although the earlier church may not have been completed until its dedication in 1242. The current cruciform building largely resulted from fifteenth-century reconstruction, with its choir dating from about 1448. Its central tower is thought to have influenced those at St Machar’s Cathedral in Aberdeen. John Knox preached here in 1559, an event associated with the opening of the Scottish Reformation. Later work included alterations by James Gillespie Graham in 1825 and restoration by Sir Robert Lorimer as a First World War memorial. Notable features include historic and modern stained glass, medieval fittings, a restored Marian chandelier and 63 bells, including a 35-bell carillon installed in 1935.
