About St. Elidyr's Church
St. Elidyr’s Church stands at Cheriton, within the community of Stackpole and Castlemartin in southern Pembrokeshire. Set in a wooded valley on the Stackpole Estate, it has historic links with the Cawdor family, who formerly owned the estate and worshipped there. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and is also known by dedications combining St James and St Elidyr.
The building has medieval origins, although later work incorporated much of its earliest fabric. Its slender tower dates from the 12th or 13th century, while part of the chancel is also medieval. Sir George Gilbert Scott directed an extensive restoration in 1851, rebuilding the nave and porch and refacing much of the exterior in Cambrian sandstone. The cruciform church has a slate roof, two transepts, a chapel and a south porch containing an early inscribed stone. Other notable features include medieval effigies, a spiral tower stair and an Arts and Crafts lychgate.
