About St Thomas à Becket Chapel, Milford Haven
St Thomas à Becket Chapel stands in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, on the northern side of the Haven estuary. This Grade II listed building was privately sold in 2012, having previously served as an Anglican chapel of ease following its twentieth-century restoration.
Built in 1180 and dedicated to Thomas Becket, the chapel was associated with nearby Pill Priory. It also acted as a beacon for sailors, alongside two chapels that no longer survive. Already ruinous by the seventeenth century, it housed Parliamentarian troops in 1644 and later provided storage for the Rath battery. After use as a stable and pigsty, it was reconstructed between 1930 and 1938. Rubble masonry and a graduated slate roof form the exterior, while the compact nave and chancel have pointed barrel-vaulted ceilings. Inside are plastered vaults, chancel niches and a curved rood beam. South-facing stained-glass windows date from 1935 and 1939.
