About St Thomas the Martyr
St Thomas the Martyr is an active Church of England parish church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. It stands in Osney, close to Oxford railway station, between Becket Street and Hollybush Row. Dedicated to Thomas Becket, the church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Although tradition assigns it an earlier origin, records indicate that Osney Abbey’s canons received the site during the 1180s and built a chapel around 1190. Parts of the medieval structure survive among later alterations. Robert Burton enlarged the building during his curacy from 1616 to 1640, while Civil War prisoners destroyed its medieval glass. Extensive work began in 1825: the floor was lifted by three feet to reduce flood risk, the roof and south wall were reconstructed, and much of the original twelfth-century chancel arch was removed. Further nineteenth-century changes included a new north aisle, vestry and chancel arch.
