Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford is a Church of England cathedral and the principal church of the Oxford diocese, where the Bishop of Oxford has their seat. It also serves as the chapel for Christ Church within the University of Oxford, giving it an unusual combined function. Among England’s smaller cathedrals, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The site held a nunnery and parish church before that building was destroyed by fire in 1002. An Augustinian community had been established there by 1122, with rebuilding recorded around 1180. Cardinal Wolsey later suppressed the priory for his planned college, but Henry VIII retained the church and made it Oxford’s cathedral in 1546. Dating largely from the late Norman period, the nave, choir, transepts and central tower are joined by later work extending to the Perpendicular style. Notable details include a ten-section rose window and the shrine of St Frideswide in the Latin Chapel.
