About St Peter's Church

St Peter’s Church, on First Turn in Wolvercote, Oxford, is the local Anglican parish church and remains in use for worship. It forms part of the Diocese of Oxford and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Worship on this site may date from the later 12th century, and records confirm a chapel here in 1236. The surviving western tower is thought to be 14th-century work, with two storeys, a crenellated top and two sundials. Apart from this tower, the medieval structure was taken down in 1859. Charles Buckeridge designed the replacement, built in 1860 over the earlier footings in a Gothic Revival interpretation of the Decorated style. Historic furnishings include a simply patterned Norman font and an ornate memorial to Sir John Walter, his two wives and their children. The stained glass includes an east window from 1882 illustrating central events in Christ’s life, and a colourful 1976 Palm Sunday design by John Piper, made by Patrick Reyntiens.
