About St Michael at the North Gate
St Michael at the North Gate is a Church of England parish church in central Oxford, standing on Cornmarket Street beside Ship Street. Its name recalls its position by the former northern entrance through the city walls. A Grade I listed building, it has been Oxford’s ceremonial City Church since 1971, incorporating the former parishes of St Martin and All Saints. The Mayor and city corporation worship here on civic occasions.
The church dates from the early 11th century and was built using coral rag stone. Its surviving Anglo-Saxon tower, dating to about 1040, is regarded as part of Oxford’s oldest building. John Plowman reconstructed the northern aisle and transept in 1833. Visitors can climb the tower to see its historic clock mechanism and views across Oxford. Displays include a door from the nearby prison where the Oxford Martyrs were held, John Wesley’s pulpit, and the marriage certificate of William Morris and Jane Burden, who married here in 1859.
