About St Mary the Virgin, Iffley

St Mary the Virgin, Iffley is an active Church of England parish church in Iffley, once a village and now part of Oxford. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and has survived with relatively few alterations.

Built in about 1160 for the St Remy family, the church is Romanesque in character and may have received financial support from the de Clinton family of Kenilworth Castle. Its eastern section was enlarged in the Early Gothic style around 1230, when a small room for the anchoress Annora was added beside the south wall. Original rounded windows and entrances remain. A 1982 stained-glass Tree of Life by John Piper and David Wasley was installed in 1995. Facing it is Roger Wagner’s Flowering Tree window, made by Patrick Costeloe and completed in 2012.
