About St Mary Magdalen

St Mary Magdalen is an Anglican parish church on Beaumont Street in Oxford, dedicated to Mary Magdalene. It belongs to the Church of England and is protected at Grade I. The church remains active, with worship following the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Mass is held twice each weekday and three times on Sundays, including the principal Sunday service at 10.30 am.

A wooden Saxon church near Oxford’s former North Gate was destroyed by fire in 1074 and replaced with a Norman chapel. Bishop Hugh of Lincoln commissioned a rebuilding in 1194, with surviving medieval fabric in the chancel and south aisle. The chancel was reconstructed in the late 13th century, while the present Lady Chapel developed from a Carmelite chapel founded in 1320. The west tower dates from 1511–31. Victorian work included an 1840s Gothic Revival north aisle by George Gilbert Scott and W. B. Moffatt. Notable features include a carved wooden chest from the early 14th century and a ring of ten bells.
