About St Mary and St Nicholas
St Mary and St Nicholas serves the Church of England parish of Littlemore, in Oxford, Oxfordshire. It remains an active place of worship within the Diocese of Oxford and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Founded by John Henry Newman, who later became a Roman Catholic cardinal, the church developed an association with Anglo-Catholic worship.
Designed by Henry Jones Underwood, the church was erected between 1835 and 1836, with Newman’s mother, Jemima, laying its first stone. It was consecrated in September 1836 and initially functioned as an additional chapel for the Oxford parish of St Mary the Virgin. After Littlemore gained separate parish status in 1847, the building received its present dedication. Joseph Clarke added the chancel and tower in 1848. Around 1900, an east window containing glass designed by Louis Davis was installed in memory of the former vicar Vernon Green. Louise Imogen Guiney presented a crucifix sculpture in 1901 to commemorate Newman’s centenary.
